The Department of Physics in the School of Natural Sciences at Shiv Nadar University invites applications for admission in its Ph.D. program in January 2013 at the start of the Spring Semester of the current academic year.  
Current research interests of the physics faculty members are broadly in the areas of condensed matter and particle physics including theoretical physics, computational physics, high-energy particle physics, atmospheric physics, surface physics, energy materials, biosensors, light emitting devices, dielectrics, oxide thin films and ion beam physics. Many of the research projects are interdisciplinary in nature, involving collaboration within and outside the department/university. Eligibility: A candidate should have a masters degree in science or engineering with a minimum of 60% marks (first class) or an equivalent grade point. For a candidate having a 4-year BS/B.Tech. degree, the norm may be relaxed if s/he can demonstrate her/his knowledge through a written test and interview. The selection criteria may be relaxed further for candidates having a valid score in any one of the following National Examinations: CSIR-UGC, NET and GATE. 

The candidates who are in the final semester of their qualifying degree can also apply for provisional admission.

Financial Assistance: All candidates admitted to the Ph.D. program are eligible for teaching/research assistantships/fellowships of Rs.5.45 lakhs per annum along with tuition fee waivers.

Shiv Nadar University has partnered with Carnegie Mellon University to offer joint programs in engineering. Under the CMU- SNU scholar program, the students will spend two years in USA and two years in India. Upon successful completion of the program they will be awarded degrees both from CMU and SNU. The first batch begins in August 2013.

Programs offered under CMU-Shiv Nadar University Scholar Program: 
  • B.Tech. (Electronics and Communication Engineering) from SNU and BS (Electrical and Computer Engineering) from CMU
  • B.Tech. (Mechanical Engineering) from SNU and BS (Mechanical Engineering) from CMU

The programs will be executed in the following format over a period of 4 years:

Assessments: 

Applicant will have to appear for the following assessments before January 31, 2013:
  • SAT Reasoning Test OR ACT with Writing
  • SAT Subject Test in Mathematics Level 1 OR SAT Subject Test in Mathematics Level 2
  • SAT Subject Test in Physics OR SAT Subject Test in Chemistry
  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)

The scores from these assessments would be required while filling up the application form. Therefore we suggest you plan to take them at the earliest.

For SAT, keep in mind you have to register at least a month before the actual testing day. If you have not appeared for SAT already, there are only two opportunities available for you to appear to be eligible to apply to CMU – SNU Scholar Program: December 1, 2012 and January 26, 2013.

  • The fees given here is indicative and can be revised at the discretion of CMU or SNU due to circumstances unforeseen right now.
  • The fees is at current currency exchange rate and may change with exchange rate fluctuation.
  • The fees is for the standard duration of the program which is 4 years and does not include any unforeseen extensions.
  • The fees does not include any additional programs undertaken at either CMU or SNU.
  • The fees does not cover the internships required in Semesters 6 and 9.

Scholarship:

Shiv Nadar University will offer scholarship to the tune of INR 3.8 lakhs on its standard fees over the duration of the program.

In comparison to pursuing a full-fledged program from any of the top engineering schools in USA, this program will cost 35-45% (INR 40 – 60 lakhs) lesser to students. 

Compared to CMUs direct full time program, this program will cost 45% or INR 60 lakhs less.
